Welcome to LifeMantle: a private home for your family's story
What LifeMantle is, why we built it, and a practical set of tips and tricks to get the most out of your family's private universe — from your first post to Future Letters your child opens years from now.
If you're here, you probably have a camera roll with thousands of photos, a few group chats where the good ones get lost, and a quiet worry in the back of your mind: what happens to all of this over time? LifeMantle exists to answer that question. It's a private, invite-only home for your family's photos, videos, milestones, letters, and story — a place that's calm to use this week and built to be handed down over the years.
This first post is two things at once: an introduction to what LifeMantle is and why we made it, and a hands-on guide to getting the most out of it. If you're brand new, read it top to bottom. If you're already set up, skip ahead to the tips — there are a few features families tend to discover late that are worth turning on early.
Why we built LifeMantle
The tools most of us use to keep family memories were never really designed for families. Social networks are built to maximize attention: they show your child's first steps to strangers, wrap them in ads, and sort them by an algorithm that decides what you see. Cloud photo libraries are private, but they're lonely — a shoebox in the cloud that no one else in the family can add to or enjoy together. And group chats are wonderful in the moment and hopeless a year later, when the photo you want is buried under ten thousand messages.
LifeMantle is our attempt at something different, built on a few firm beliefs:
- Private by default. Every family lives in its own invite-only space. There is no public profile, no discovery, no strangers. You approve who gets in and what appears.
- No ads, no algorithms, no scraping. Your family's memories are not a product. Nothing here is sold or used to train AI models.
- For every day — and for the long run. It should be a joy to open on a Tuesday night, and still be here, intact, when your child is grown.
- Your data is always yours. You can export everything at any time, and it's encrypted at rest and backed up every night.
The moments go by so fast. LifeMantle makes sure none of them are ever lost.
The two halves of LifeMantle
It helps to think of LifeMantle as having a daily half and a legacy half, working together.
The daily half — stay close, together
The feed is where your family gathers this week. Post a photo or a short video, and the people you've invited — grandparents, aunts and uncles, godparents — can react and comment, just like a social app, but with none of the noise. The feed is ordered by when things were posted, so the newest moments are always at the top. It's the part you'll open most, and it's the reason far-away family suddenly feels close again.
The legacy half — kept, and passed on
Underneath the daily rhythm, LifeMantle is quietly building something permanent: a complete, chronological timeline of your child's life, a record of milestones and growth, and a vault of Future Letters your child can open years from now. You don't have to do anything special for this to happen — it assembles itself as you go.
Tips & tricks: getting the most out of LifeMantle
Here's the practical part. None of these require any technical know-how — they're just the settings and habits that make LifeMantle noticeably better. We've roughly ordered them the way we'd set things up ourselves.
1. Set up your universe and make it feel like yours
When you create your family's universe, take two minutes to add a cover photo, a profile picture, and a short description in the About section. This is the first thing invited family sees, and a warm header sets the tone for everyone who joins. You can reposition an uploaded image within its frame, so don't worry about cropping it perfectly before you upload.
2. Invite your circle — and give everyone the right role
LifeMantle is invite-only, and you invite people by email. As you add family, give each person a role that matches how involved you want them to be:
- Admin — full control, including approving members and moderating what appears. Best kept to the parents.
- Trusted family — close family who can post and contribute freely.
- Member — can view and take part in the feed.
- Guest — a limited view for people you want to include lightly.
A good habit: designate a second admin early — ideally the other parent — so the universe is never dependent on a single person. New members go through admin approval, so you always stay in control of who's inside.
3. Organize as you go with shared albums
The feed is great for the moment; albums are how you find things later. Create albums for the milestones and seasons that matter — 'First year', 'Grandma's visit', 'Summer at the lake' — and let the whole family add to them. Because everyone contributes, you end up with photos you'd never have gotten yourself: the ones taken from the other side of the room.
4. Let the timeline do the work
Every moment you add falls automatically into a chronological life timeline — no sorting required. One thing worth knowing: the timeline is ordered by when a moment happened, not when you posted it. So if you back-date an old photo from before you joined, it slots into the right place in the story rather than jumping to the top. This is what lets you gradually fold in the years that came before LifeMantle.
5. Capture milestones and growth while they're fresh
First smile, first step, first word — log them as milestones the moment they happen, and they're celebrated together and preserved forever. Use the growth tracker to record weight and height over time; it's a small habit that becomes a treasured chart, and it's shared with exactly the people who care and no one else.
6. Write a Future Letter (this is the one people love most)
Open the Future Letters vault and write a letter your child will open years from now — on a birthday, a graduation, a wedding day. Future Letters are end-to-end encrypted in your browser and sealed with your passphrase and a one-time recovery code, so the letter is sealed before it ever leaves your device and LifeMantle can't read it. As a safety net, the space owner also holds a recovery key and can recover any letter if a passphrase is ever lost — so a forgotten passphrase never loses a letter forever. Keep your passphrase and recovery code somewhere safe, like a password manager. It's the most quietly powerful thing in LifeMantle: a way to speak to the person your child will become.
7. Use the private photo vault for your most sensitive photos
Some photos are more private than others. The photo vault encrypts them in your browser before they're uploaded and locks them to your own passphrase. Keep in mind that a passphrase-protected vault is only as recoverable as your passphrase — store it somewhere safe, like a password manager, because it's yours alone.
8. Add LifeMantle to your home screen
LifeMantle works in any web browser, and you can install it to your phone's home screen for a full-screen, app-like experience — no app store required. On iPhone, tap the Share button in Safari and choose 'Add to Home Screen'; on Android, use your browser's 'Install app' or 'Add to Home screen' option. After that it opens like any other app, and it's the fastest way to post a moment before it slips by.
9. Turn the weekly digest into a family ritual
The weekly digest is a gentle email summarizing everything shared that week, so no one misses a moment — even the grandparent who forgets to check in. It's especially good for extended family who want to stay close without being on the app every day.
10. Search when you need something specific
As your universe grows, use search to find any memory by its title, note, or place in seconds. A little habit that pays off: add a short note or place to your posts as you go — it makes them findable years later.
11. Rest easy about backups and export
Everything in LifeMantle is encrypted at rest and backed up every night, and you can export your data at any time. You're never locked in, and you never have to wonder whether it's safe. Peace of mind is a feature.
12. Prefer español? Switch anytime
LifeMantle is fully bilingual. Use the language toggle to switch the entire experience between English and Spanish — handy when your family spans both.
Start small, and let it grow
You don't need a plan or a perfect system. Create your universe, invite one or two people, and post one photo tonight. The daily rhythm takes care of itself, and the legacy builds quietly underneath it. A year from now you'll open LifeMantle and find something you'd otherwise have lost — and that's the whole point.
Welcome to LifeMantle. We're so glad your family is here.
